On December 23rd 1990, the country of Slovenia held a referendum and they voted on leaving the country of Yugoslavia and become independent. Soon after Croatia held their own referendum that resulted in Croatia also declaring their independence from Yugoslavia. Both countries finalized their independence movements on June 25th 1991. Many Yugoslavs (Mainly the Serbs) disliked the idea of Slovenia and Croatia becoming a country. Yugoslavia first attacked Slovenia which sparked the 10 day war; however Yugoslav troops were soon removed from Slovenia 10 days later. After removing their troops from Slovenia, many Yugoslav troops went into Croatia which caused the Croatian War of Independence. Then on September 8th 1991 the country of Macedonia held a referendum and along with Slovenia and Croatia they also voted to become independent and not be a part of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia ignored the Macedonia independence movement and focused more on Bosnia when they declared their independence from Yugoslavia on March 1st 1992. Since the majority of Bosniaks population is either Croat or Serb, the Yugoslav government mainly Serbs did not want their people to be a part of a new country, so Yugoslavia then attacked major Croat and Bosniak areas in order to scare them off and let Yugoslavia gain control over Bosnia. This conflict lasted for three years in which Yugoslav forces soon left the Bosniak and Croat areas, and returned control to Bosnia. These conflicts between the Balkan states of Yugoslavia resulted in the breakup of Yugoslavia into five main countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was renamed Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. By 2006 Montenegro declared independence from Serbia and Montenegro, which resulted in the formation of two new countries: Serbia and Montenegro. In 1998 the violence continued in the predominately Albanian region of Kosovo which is governed by Serbia, and Kosovo later declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. Many conflicts are still affecting the now 7 Balkan Countries; tensions are building between the Croat and Serb regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Republic of Srpska which is mainly Serb wants independence from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also the predominately Hungarian region of Serbia named Vojvodina wants independence from Serbia.
